Ken and Robin Tywoniw, of Lobelia, had an unusual animal emergency last Wed-nesday morning when five-year-old Blue Heelers Roc and Goey came home after an encounter of a rare kind.
Robin said when she first saw the dogs, she thought they were fighting over the bones of some animal, but closer observation and a visit to veterinarian Julie Gibson at the Frankford Veterinary Hospital confirmed that the dogs had met up with a porcupine.
Goey had quills in her snout, while Roc suffered from quills in her mouth and snout.
Although such incidents are common in other states, Robin said it appears to be a first in this area.
From the medical update department: Goey and Roc are doing fine now.
