The Pocahontas County High School Boys soccer team won the Region III, Section I Championship by defeating Nicholas County, 6-0, Thursday evening in Summersville.

All four school classes contributed goals for Pocahontas in the match. Senior Phillip Green scored two goals and led the team with eight shots on goal. Sophomore Connor Pyles scored two goals with five shots. Junior Chad Friel knocked in one goal on five shots;  and freshman Matthew Pritt scored a goal with just one shot. PCHS goalie junior Conlin Halterman had a relatively easy evening, thanks to the Warriors overwhelming dominance in ball possession. During the entire match, the Grizzlies managed just four shots on goal.  The Warriors have compiled an impressive overall record of 13-3-1 this season – exactly the same record they had last year after winning the Sectional Championship.

The Warriors advance to the Region III Championship Game in Bluefield on Tuesday, where they will face the reigning Class A-AA State Champions, the Pikeview Panthers.

See the print edition Thursday for a full report and comments from Warrior players and Coach Cully McCurdy.
