It was an evening for good news, surrounded by pretty decorations, at the Marlinton Town Council meeting Monday. The municipal building auditorium was decorated for a prom, but there could’ve been dancing and celebrating as Mayor Sam Felton shared the news that the town received $1.5 million from the Core of Engineers for the town’s sewer project.
Felton also shared that the town received a $100,000 from the Division of Transportation for the design process for a sidewalk project.
Getting back to the sewer project, as well as the water and stormwater projects, a large group from Thrasher Engineering was at the meeting to give an update on the projects. The group is in town this week to survey the current water and sewer systems in order to ensure the upcoming upgrade and replacement plans cover the needs of the town.
Fred Hypes said that the plan is to have all three project plans ready and all the funding in place to get started with boots on the ground by spring 2025.
In other business, council discussed the status of the Municipal Home Rule Application. Recorder Mary Clendenen said the application will be reviewed in July and council will be updated at that time.
Council approved the intent to apply for the West Virginia Division of Highways 2024 grant for non-traditional projects.
Marlinton Town Council meets the first Monday of each month, excluding holidays, at 7 p.m. in the municipal building auditorium. The public is welcome to attend in person or online through a Zoom link.
