TWO Marlinton Elementary School fifth graders, Jarrell Clifton, left, and Hunter Lundmark, chose “Forgotten Wars” as the topic of their social studies project.
Both boys had an interest in war, and when they went online to research the subject, they came across the Korean War, which is often referred to as “The Forgotten War.”
The boys prepared their project for the school and county level social studies fairs, and as they discussed it with their family, they learned there was a Korean War veteran living in Pocahontas County – Floyd Davis, Jr., who owns and operates Motor Parts in Marlinton.
Davis, who was drafted in his late teens-early 20s, served on the front lines in Korea for nine months.
The boys added their conversation with Davis to their project before they traveled to the regional competition.
Doing the project and speaking with Davis to get a first-hand account of the war helped the boys see why it is important to never forget.
