Lawrence Wren “Laurie” Cameron, 85, of Hillsboro, passed away Friday, November 1, 2024, in Washington State.
Born in December 1938, he was raised on New York City streets and in a Swiss boarding school. He attended high school in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, served the U.S. Army in Germany and graduated from Penn State.
Laurie was a man of great passions. He was competitive in bike racing, kayaking and skiing.
He came to the Allegheny Highlands for cave exploration and rock climbing, where he captured on camera the region’s natural beauty, humanity and culture.
He published two books of photography. He made a career of residential energy conservation and, in retirement, devoted countless volunteer hours to the Hillsboro Library.
Laurie supported the Pocahontas County Opera House and loved all genres of music. He stayed current on government/politics and relished a lively debate – and a good limerick.
Laurie was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Jennifer Rulkowski.
He is survived by grandsons, Alex and Christopher Rulkowski; their grandmother, Majorie Cameron; son-in-law, Jacek Rulkow-ski; goddaughter, Colleen Hamlet; and a cadre of friends.
A memorial gathering featuring his finest photography will be announced in the spring.
