The (15-5) Summers County Lady Bobcats were ranked #2 in the Class AA AP Poll and were also ranked #5 in the Coach’s Poll. The sophisticated MaxPreps.com Class A Girls Basketball Ranking had the (10-10) Pocahontas County High School Lady Warriors ranked #10 in Class A. PCHS has dropped out of the AP Poll and was not in the Coaches Poll. SCHS hosted PCHS February 16 for a second encounter this season. PCHS only lost by 4 points in the earlier game, 47-51, at PCHS January 23.
The Lady Warriors took the first quarter this time by 2 points (17-15). PCHS freshman Allyson Taylor and junior Mackenzie Taylor scored one and two points respectively to open the second quarter, and then SC exploded for an 11-0 run to win the second quarter by 8 points (11-3). SCHS led at the half by 6 points (26-20).
Coaches Mike Kane and Tim McClung must have given the right instructions during the half, as Pocahontas upped their lead to 7 points (39-32) with a (19-6) third quarter effort. PC junior Riley Pollack scored 11 points that included three treys and a two close together which was the most scored by any player in any quarter of this game. PC took charge again and won the fourth quarter by 1 point (14-13), and the game ended (53-45). PC improved their rec-ord to (11-10, and SC dropped to (15-6).
SC was led by seniors, Grace Harvey with 20 game high points and junior Abby Persinger with 14 points. Both players scored in all 4 quarters. Junior Avery Lilly, who scored 20 points and was high scorer in the previous matchup, was held to 5 points.
Pollack scored 19 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore Calli Propst, with 12 points, 4 of 8 free throws and 7 rebounds, scored in all 4 quarters. Freshman Allyson Taylor helped with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 5 deflections, 3 steals and scored in all four quarters. Senior Olivia Vandevender totaled 9 points, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Junior Mackenzie Taylor tallied 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 points.
SC was called for 4 more personal fouls (13-9). Both squads grabbed 28 rebounds. PC had 2 more turnovers (25-23). PC made the following number of field goals by quarter: first – 7 of 15 (47%), second – 1 of 9 (11%), third – 7 of 19 (37%), fourth – 5 of 9 (56%), and game – 20 of 52 (38%).
No. 2 seed Pocahontas County hosts and will open their WV Class A Region II Section 2 play versus No. 3 seed Tygarts Valley at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 21.

Pocahontas County took the first quarter of a 2 quarter game (due to 4 SC girls having an illness) by 1 point (16-15). PC took the second by 5 points (11-6) and upped their lead at the half to 6 points (27-21). The PC JV record ends at a good 12-5.
PC freshman Alexis Arbogast was the game top scorer with 9 points, and Allyson Taylor was next with 8 points, 6 rebounds and hitting 4 of 5 free throws. Sophomore Ramona Hardy added 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks; freshman Addison Hamrick totaled 4 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists; freshman Caroline Bennett tallied 6 points, 3 steals, 2 deflections and 2 of 2 free throws.
PC and SC were called for 9 and 7 personal fouls respectively. Both teams grabbed 15 rebounds each, and SC committed 2 more turnovers, 16-14.

Tygarts Valley V, 51
The Pocahontas County Lady Warriors traveled to Mill Creek to play the Tygarts Valley Lady Bulldogs February 1, for their second encounter this season. PCHS beat TV 62-34 at PC on January 3. PCHS senior all-state player Olivia Vandevender was game high scorer at this February 1 game scoring 19 points and was the team high scorer for the fifth time this season and leads the PC scoring with 150 points. Olivia was team high in 7 of 9 stats including hitting 7 of 16 field goals (44%), 3 blocks, 3 deflections and 3 steals. TV team high scorer this time was TV sophomore Alyssa Swecker with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Next was TV sophomore Sarah Defibaugh with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
Other PC players with high stats were: Allyson Taylor – 12 rebounds, 9 points, and 2 steals; sophomore Calli Propst – 7 points and 6 assists; junior Mackenzie Taylor – 7 points and 5 rebounds; sophomore Shayla Bennett – 6 points, 4 of 4 free throws (100%) and 5 rebounds; junior Riley Pollack – 6 points; and senior Kynlee Wilfong – 1 of 1 three (100%).
This game was a foul fest! PC was called for 27 personal fouls (versus 21 in the previous game), and TV was called for 26 (vs only 8 in the previous game). Four PC starters fouled out of this game, and 2 TV starters plus a sub fouled out. Each team had one player with four fouls.
TV led in rebounds this time, 42 to 32, and PC had fewer turnovers, 18 to 29. PC made the following number of field goals by quarter: first – 6 of 18 (33%), second – 8 of 14 (57%), third – 2 of 15 (13%), fourth – 6 of 16 (38%) and game – 22 of 63 (35%).
The Lady Warriors won the game by only 9 points (60-51). With the win they improve to (6-8), and TV drops to (4-10).
There is a girls Pink Out at PCHS Saturday, February 10, vs Pendleton Co. V only – 1 p.m. The girls’ senior night vs Richwood at PCHS is Monday, February 12 (JV – 5:45 p.m., V – 7:30 p.m.). The PCHS girls will travel to Petersburg Wednesday, February 14, (JV – 5:45 p.m., V – 8 p.m.).

Allyson Taylor was the team high scorer again with 17 points and a double-double of team highs with 14 rebounds, 5 steals, 7 of 12 free throws and 1 block. Allyson played in the first and second quarters and made 12 and 5 points respectively. Freshman Alexis Arbogast was next with a double-double of 10 points, 11 rebounds, 2 treys, 4 steals and 1 block. TV freshman Lilly Lanham was game high scorer with 21 points and made 7 of 10 foul shots (70%).
Eight Lady Warriors scored in the game. Freshman Charleigh Halterman was the only other player in the game to hit a three. Freshman Caroline Bennett added 6 points, 7 rebounds, 3 deflections and 4 steals. Sophomore Ramona Hardy tallied 7 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 points and 1 block. Freshman Addison Hamrick tallied 7 points, 5 assists and 1 block. Scoring in the game were: freshman Riley Cassell – 4 points and 3 rebounds, and freshman Bay- lee Nelson – 2 points and 2 steals.
PC was called for 20 personal fouls (vs 18 last game), and TV was called for 21 (vs only 9 last game). PC led again in rebounds, 43 to 32, and had fewer turnovers again, 29 to 39.
With the win PCJV improves to (8-3).
