The three weekends before Christmas at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park are packed like Santa’s gift bag. The celebration kicks off Saturday, December 7, at 5:15 p.m. with the annual lighting of the community Christmas tree at the community center.
This year, the towering 24-foot tree was graciously donated by Green Bank resident Bob Vance and is the tallest tree to ever grace the town’s Christmas season.
“It was a very kind offering, and we gratefully accepted it,” activity co-coordinator Kim Dilts said.
After the lighting, visitors can make their way to the Cass Company Store where they can visit with Santa Claus and give him their wish lists.
By 7 p.m., it will be time to return to the community center for the annual square dance with music provided by Juanita Fireball and the Continental Drifters. Calling the dance will be Eugene and Ellen Ratcliffe, who make it easy for first timers to join the old pros on the dance floor.
“They make it really understandable for people who have never really done it before,” Dilts said. “They do all of our dances, and it’s always such a good time.”
The second weekend of celebration will feature the Holiday Craft Market Saturday, December 14, at the community center, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Artisans, crafters and chefs will have gifts for everyone on your list – as well as one or two for yourself.
The third and final weekend before Christmas will start with the second annual Christmas Cookie Bake-off, Saturday, December 21, followed by Bingo at the community center.
Bakers of all ages are encouraged to enter the bake-off and show off their sweet concoctions. The deadline to enter is Sunday, December 9.
In addition to the Saturday events, you are invited to a special brunch with Santa at 11 a.m. Sundays, December 8, 15 and 22.
