Charles “Buck” Moore, 72, passed away in his Clawson home Friday, April 25, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He succumbed to his third fight with oral cancer.
Buck graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1970, where he played basketball and football. He then attended Marshall University for three years, finding lifelong community in the TKE Fraternity.
Yet, Buck’s college experience taught him that his path lay in a different direction. After returning to Pocahontas County High School to participate in an adult learning program, he pursued a career in welding that took him from the Norfolk shipyards to a long career in the construction industry. Along the way he became an excellent mechanic and ultimately worked as a project manager in the oil and gas fields.
Buck’s greatest joy lay in the relationships he built and fostered in his professional life, but especially with his friends and family. These qualities served him well in his career and while coaching youth football. He forged genuine relationships with every team he worked with that continued well beyond his retirement.
Following retirement, Buck became an avid outdoorsman, often calling the Greenbrier River Trail his second home. He rode his bike more than 50 miles a week, skied at Snowshoe and kayaked into his late 60s.
Buck was preceded in death by his wife, Kimberly; son, Charles Colin; and his parents Charles and Faye Moore, who were educators in Pocahontas County.
Buck is survived by his children, Katherine “Katie” and Gavin; sister, Grace Jane Wigal; brothers, Donald Moore and David Moore; and their families that include many nieces and nephews.
Despite personal tragedies, Buck remained positive and grateful for the life he had. Even in his final months, he often said, “I’ve had a good life.” He gave credit to his positive upbringing, his many friends along the way, and the love of his family.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, September 28, 2025, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Opera House in Marlinton. All who knew and called Buck a friend are invited to join the family in commemorating his life, with lunch being served at 12:45 p.m. with a short program immediately thereafter.
Come relax, eat, hear Buck’s favorite music, share a story or two, and celebrate the life of someone who thought he lived in the greatest place on earth.
