Donald James Sharp, age 89, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, September 21, 2024, at his home.
Born July 31, 1935, in Marlinton, he was a son of the late Charles Jack and Ora Belle Thompson Sharp.
He attended Calvary Bible Church. Don was a graduate of Marlinton High School. He served in the United States Navy from July 24, 1953 until his discharge July 9, 1956 at the rank of RMSN and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Don worked as a West Virginia State Trooper from 1958 until his retirement in 1981 at rank of Corporal and was recipient of the Law Enforcement Purple Heart for being wounded in the line of duty. After his retirement, Don served as Senior Status Magistrate with the Morgan County Magistrate Court System. He was a member of Beckley Lodge #95 A.F. & A.M., Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60 and the West Virginia Troopers Association. He enjoyed hunting and camping, and loved traveling with his wife, Mildred, as they visited all 50 states.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jimmie Hale Sharp; two sisters, Patricia Lamoureux and Brenda “Cookie” Doss; and five brothers, Jack, Earl, Lew, Dick and Hub Sharp.
Don is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mildred Marie Underwood Sharp, of Berkley Springs; four children, Walker Denny Sharp (Kim), of White Lake, Michigan, Donna Lynn Stains (Keith), of Harpers Ferry, Wanda Sharp Childers (Steve), of Lexington, Virginia, and Kevin Scott Sharp (Amy), of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sisters, Catherine Baechtel, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, Kay Burke, of Millboro Springs, Virginia, and Charlotte Slagle, of Marlinton; three brothers, Craig Sharp, of Hopewell, Virginia, Tom Sharp, of Marlinton, and Doug Sharp, of Petersburg; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60, 527 N. Washington Street in Berkeley Springs, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor BJ Worley will officiate. Military honors will be provided from the Tri-State Honor Guard. Burial will be private.
