Arlene Pearl Rexrode, 96, of Arbovale, passed away Friday, July 26, 2024, in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
Born January 6, 1928, at Arbovale, she was a daughter of the late Wesley Newton Vandevander and Lora Ena Rader Vandevander.
Arlene was united in marriage August 21, 1945 to Hubert Hoover Rexrode who preceded her in death December 23, 1995.
Arlene was an active member of Arbovale United Methodist Church, where she had served as treasurer since 1947. She and Anna Lou Orndorff were leaders of the Arbovale Methodist Youth for many years.
She served on the Southern States Home Advisory Board, attending many meetings in Richmond, Virginia; and she taught ceramics at 4-H camp for several years.
After her husband passed away she continued to manage their 250 acre farm. Her farm was selected as Conservation Farm of 2012 for Pocahontas County, and in 2013 was selected for the West Virginia Women in Agriculture Award. She was very proud of their farm.
Arlene was very active in the Farm Bureau and received the West Virginia Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award. She served on the board of directors, membership committee and chaired the women’s committee. She was Region 8 Vice Chairperson for the State Women’s Committee and attended various states leadership annual meetings. She went to AFBF annual meetings in St. Louis. She was very active with the Picture Agriculture in West Virginia Poster Contest with the help of her good friend, Trudy Underwood.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Byll Greene; grand- daughter, Donna Byrd; sisters, Maxine Harden, Ruth Pugh and Leona Simmons; and a brother, John Wesley Vandevander.
She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Rebecca Ann “Becky” McCarty, and husband, Clyde, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, and Starlet Greene, of Pikeville, North Carolina; four great-grandchildren, Brian Warner, and wife, Elizabeth “Bethe” Warner, Luca Byrd, Jackie Byrd and Casey Byrd; one great-grandchild on the way; a sister, Mary Cassell, of Arbovale; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday, August 4, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel in Arbovale.
Funeral service will be held Monday, August 5, 2024, 1 p.m. at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Chapel with Pastor Amy Paul officiating. Burial will follow in Arbovale Cemetery.
