This World War I photograph shows Leslie Vaughn Sharp seated in the center with his comrades David Edwards and Rush Ulery behind him. Born in Frost, W.Va., November 4, 1893, he was the son of Rev. Oscar Butcher Sharp and Ella Shrader Sharp. He was the brother of Aldine, Clarence, Viola and Gladys Sharp. Leslie Sharp married Dela E. Harper, of Pendleton County, in 1920. They later moved to Rockingham County, Virginia, where, in 1942, Sharp registered with the Selective Service in what was called the “Old Man’s Draft” because it registered men who were 45 to 64 years old at the time.
Other photographs of Leslie V. and Clarence L. Sharp will be included in the Preserving Pocahontas World War II Photo Exhibit, which is now on display at Sharp’s Country Store in Slaty Fork. Photo Courtesy of Sheila Lipscomb, Gladys Sharp Collection, ID: PHP002069
