In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Bird; and great-grandson, Jacob Matthew Walker.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Bird, of Largo, Florida, Beth Hunt (Paul) and Edith Allin (Tom), all of Richmond, Virginia; three sons, Richard Bird (Nina), of Switzerland, Michael Bird, of Clearwater, Florida, and Richard McGrath (Stacy), of Hanover, Virginia; brothers, Wayne Bird (Sandy), of Fayetteville, and Fred Bird (Doneeta), of Elkins; trusted friend, Tom Moore (Lindie), of Marlinton; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
