The Pocahontas County High School Lady Warriors soccer team’s 2023 season has begun and summaries of the first four games are provided below:
At Braxton County
August 19
The Lady Warriors scored two goals in the first half and the Lady Eagles scored one for a halftime score of 2-1 Pocahontas. Both teams scored an additional goal in the second half for a final score of 3-2 Pocahontas.
Lady Warrior scorers were forwards Eden Smith and Mileya Bircher.
Assists on these goals were from forwards and midfielders Bircher, Ramona Hardy and Brianna Cochran.
Additional shots on goal were from forwards and midfielders Riley Pollack and Erin Rider.
Defenders and midfielders Andrea Alderman, Mackenzie Taylor, Hardy, Elizabeth Friel and Ellena Bauserman stole and/or cleared the ball out of the defensive field 40 times.
Goalkeeper Shayla Bennett saved three goals and allowed two.
At Philip Barbour
August 22
The Philip Barbour Lady Colts led the Lady Warriors 8-0 at half-time. The Lady Colts scored another goal in the second half while the Lady Warriors remained scoreless for a final score of 9-0 Philip Barbour.
Lady Warrior shots on goal were from forwards and midfielders Eden Smith, Brianna Cochran and Riley Pollack.
Defenders and midfielders Kynlee Wilfong, Mileya Bircher, Mackenzie Taylor, Ellena Bauserman, Mallory McCoy, Jasey Kramer, Riley Cassell and Baylee Nelson stole and/or cleared the ball out of the defensive field 21 times.
Goalkeeper Shayla Bennett saved nine goals and allowed nine.
Elkins at PCHS
August 24
The Elkins Lady Tigers led the Lady Warriors 4-0 at half-time. The Lady Tigers scored two more goals in the second half while the Lady Warriors remained scoreless for a final score of 6-0 Elkins.
Lady Warrior shots on goal were from forwards Riley Pollack, Eden Smith, Brianna Cochran and Erin Rider.
Defenders and midfielders Mackenzie Taylor, Andrea Alderman, Smith, Ramona Hardy and Leeann Green stole and/or cleared the ball out of the defensive field 27 times.
Goalkeeper Shayla Bennett saved 15 goals and allowed six.
At Bluefield
August 26
The Lady Warriors and the Bluefield Lady Beavers each scored one goal in the first half for a 1-1 tie at half-time. Neither team scored in the second half for a final score of 1-1.
Lady Warrior scorer was Eden Smith, assisted by Ramona Hardy.
Additional shots on goal were from forwards Mileya Bircher, Riley Pollack and Brianna Cochran.
Defenders and midfielders Ellena Bauserman, Mackenzie Taylor, Kynlee Wilfong, Hardy, Alexis Arbogast and Allyson Taylor stole and/or cleared the ball out of the defensive field 27 times.
Goalkeeper Shayla Bennett saved eight goals and allowed one.
The Lady Warriors’ record is 1 win, 1 tie, 2 losses.
