The Pocahontas County High School Lady Warriors hosted Green- brier West for a Varsity and a JV game January 19. It was the first JV encounter and the second Varsity matchup between the two schools this season.
West played without three of their varsity players December 10, and started two of those players on Wednesday – #22 freshman Preslee Treadway and #24 junior Raelyn Palmer. Treadway tied Olivia Vandevender for game-high scoring on Wed-nesday with 14 points each, while Palmer scored five points for a total of 19 points. PCHS won the December game by 23 points, 47-24, and lost this game by 25 points, 35-59.
In the slow starting first game in December, West won the first and third quarters, and the sum total was only 10-8. PCHS took the second and fourth quarters total by 39-14. West won all four quarters this time with the following totals: 18-10, 15-7, 10-6 and 16-12. West hit 25 twos versus only 10 of 55 (18 percent) for PCHS, and PCHS made nine of 20 (45 percent) free throws versus three of seven (43 percent) for GWHS.
West out-rebounded PCHS by 17 (42-25), and West had one turnover fewer (37-38). Macaden Taylor grabbed nine team-high rebounds, and Allyson Alderman had game highs of se- ven deflections, five assists, four steals and four blocks. Second team-high scorer for the Warriors was Makayla Ervine with eight points including two threes. Second game-high scorer for the Cavaliers was Maddie Fields with 10 points, while Meagan Poticher scored nine points and Ava Barclay and Abigail Thomas each tallied eight points. Seven players on each team scored. PCHS drops to 5-7 and stays at 2-5 in the PVC. West improves to 5-7 and stays at 3-3 in the CC.

Head coach Mike Kane reported that his players had missed five practices due to the bad weather, and it took the Lady Warriors three quarters to kick into gear at James Monroe High School in Lindside on January 21. James Monroe dropped from Class AA to A with the addition of a fourth class for basketball two seasons ago. The Mavericks won the game in the first two quarters with 14-4 and 19-8 efforts for a 33-12 lead at the half.
JMHS 5’8” freshman Maggie Boroski scored eight of her 13 game-high second place points in the 13-8 third quarter that upped Monroe’s lead going into the final frame to 46-20. Junior 5’10” Adyson Hines kept the Mavericks lead in the last stanza with an eight-point effort that included two threes of her game-high 20 points. Six Lady Warriors scored in the fourth quarter. Eight players on the JMHS Varsity are taller than 5’8”.
Each team hit five treys. PCHS senior Makayla Er-vine hit four threes, and was PCHS team-high scorer with 12 points. Other team-high stats were: Kelsi Taylor – seven rebounds, Macaden Taylor – seven rebounds and four deflections, and Allyson Alderman – six assists and three blocks. PCHS made 13 of 42 field goal attempts (31 percent). JMHS out-rebounded PCHS 33-27 and committed less turnovers, 19 versus 30 for PCHS. PCHS drops to 5-8 and stays at 2-5 in the PVC. JMHS improves to 4-6 and stays at 1-0 in the CC.

Greenbrier West JV, 17
The PCHS JV squad took the first three quarters 13-5, 17-3 and 14-4 for a 44-12 lead after three quarters. West nipped PCHS 5-4 in the final frame, and the game was a 48-17 (a 31-point Lady Warriors’ victory). Nine Lady Warriors scored in the game, and Riley Pollack was game-high scorer with 11 points including one three, plus she dished out five team-high assists. Other team-high stats were: Mileya Bircher – six steals, four blocks and one trey (third game-high scorer – seven points), Andrea Alderman – five rebounds, and Makenzie Taylor – made four of five field goal attempts (80 percent) and was second game-high scorer with eight points. GWHS freshman Haylee Ward was tied for third game-high scorer with seven points.
West out-rebounded PCHS 26-24 and had fewer turnovers, 26 versus 30. PCHS hit 21 of 56 field goal attempts (38 percent). PCHS improves to 8-2 and stays at 5-2 in the PVC.

James Monroe JV, 35
The first quarter of the PCHS at JMHS JV game ended in a 5-5 tie, but it was “downhill” for the Lady Warriors after that. The Mavericks took the final three frames by scores of 12-5, 9-2 and 9-2 for the 35-14 win. Pocahontas grabbed only 24 rebounds versus 43 for James Monroe who has at least eight players taller than 5’8”. JMHS actually committed more turnovers, 36 versus 31 for PCHS. Both squads made only 25 percent of their foul shots, four of 16 for JMHS and three of 12 for PCHS. Neither team hit a three, but JMHS hit 16 twos versus only five for PCHS. PCHS made only five of 45 field goals (11 percent).
The two JMHS game-high scorers were freshmen Ava Dunlap – 11 and 5’11” Bry-leigh Thomas – 10. High scorer for PCHS was Andrea Alderman – four points plus six rebounds. Hannah Burks had two team-highs: seven rebounds and four steals. PCHS drops to 8-3 and stays 5-2 in the PVC.
The PCHS JV and Varsity girls basketball teams will travel to Tucker County High School Friday, January 28: JV – 5:45 p.m., V – 7 p.m. The PCHS teams will host James Monroe Tuesday, February 1: JV – 5:45 p.m., V – 7 p.m.
