Marvin L. Buterbaugh, age 76, of Linville, Virginia, died suddenly at his home, Wednesday, February 25, 2015.
Born April 1, 1938, in Big Cove Tannery, Pennsylvania, he was a son of the late Melvin Arthur and Evelyn Mellott Buterbaugh.
Marvin joined the National Guard at age 17, while he was still in high school. He was a graduate of Shippensburg State Teacher’s College in Pennsylvania; and did his graduate work at G. W. University and Pace University. He was a math teacher for five years in the Pennsylvania school system. He retired from IBM in 1993 and retired from Thrivent Financial in 2014.
He ran marathons and was a life-long athlete. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Forestville, Pennsylvania. He excelled in helping others with financial matters.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Henry Buterbaugh and Charles Leroy Buterbaugh.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Swank Buterbaugh, whom he married April 15, 1979; two sons, Kent R. Buterbaugh, of Fleming Island, Florida, and Keith R. Buterbaugh, and wife, Michelle, of Douglasville, Georgia; a sister, Joyce Thomas, of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; sister-in-law, Penny Swank, of Milton, Vermont; and a brother-in-law, Joel Swank, of Beaverton, Oregon.
A Thanksgiving of Life was held March 2 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Rev. James B. Davis officiating.
