The Yew Mountain Center is hosting a series of STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics – classes for youth in partnership with Carnegie Hall of West Virginia. These classes will be held throughout the spring and will give children and families an opportunity to learn about local ecology, exercise their problem-solving muscles, and engage their creativity with outdoor, hands-on activities.
A workshop, taught by Eddie Meyer, of Morgantown was recently held. The renowned artist, also known as “Eddie Spaghetti,” guided participants in creating many prints and greeting cards using gelatin, colorful inks, natural materials and stencils.
“Combining the elements of STEAM in an outdoor setting is really fun,” Adrienne Cedarleaf, Education Coordinator at the Yew Mountain Center, said. “The outdoors is a living classroom. I always like to figure out how you can tie back each subject to something that you find outside. While the learning is not so linear, and there may be lots of side-tracking, you’ll always walk away with an interesting piece of information. That’s what I love about it.”
Upcoming workshops include Feathers and Flocks with Tiffany Beachy on Saturday, May 15; Bugs, Butterflies and Bees with Dr. Elizabeth Long, Wednesday May 19; and Nature Mandala T-shirts, Wednesday, May 26.
All programs will be held at the YMC, from 2 to 5 p.m. Please register in advance. There is a $5 suggested donation, but we encourage all who are interested to register regardless if they choose to donate or not. Children ages seven and younger should be accompanied by an adult.
