Doris Elizabeth Snyder Beverage, age 93, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015.
Born July 9, 1921, at Valley Bend, she was the eldest child of Bulow and Jessie Snyder.
Doris grew up in Bartow, where she met and married Woodrow W. Beverage. She was a graduate of Green Bank High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College.
She taught school for many years, beginning at Cass and retiring from Tygarts Valley High School in the early 1970s.
Doris and Woodrow were long-time residents of Valley Bend, where they were members of the Valley Bend United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was on the Board of Directors for the Elkins Rehabilitation and Care Center during a period when the current facility was built.
Doris loved to sing and generously shared her vocal talent. Her warm, accepting spirit and her commitment to the development of people is evident in a letter from a former student who wrote: “I truly enjoyed learning in your classroom, and I have tried to incorporate into my daily teaching many of your methods and your sincere attention to each student… thank you so much for being a part of the ‘village’ that raised me.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on August 22, 1995, by her husband of nearly 51 years, Woodrow W. Beverage.
She is survived by her three children, Pamela L. Beverage, Penelope B. Patton and James W. Beverage; sons-in-law, James Patton and Julian Rogers; grandchildren, Rebecca Patton and Micah Patton; an aunt, Margie Lambert; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the staffs of The Suites at Heritage Point in Morgantown and Emeritus Senior Living in Harrisonburg, Virginia, for their kind and compassionate care.
