The Pocahontas County High School golf team traveled to Canaan Valley August 29 for a match against Pendleton County and Tucker County. Tucker County won the match in striking fashion with all five TCHS golfers scoring in the 40s.
However, PCHS golfer David Gibb brought home the low medalist honor for shooting a 41(+5). He faced stiff competition throughout the match from Tucker County duo Harper Russel, who scored a 42(+6), and Holden Young, who scored a 43(+7).
Other golfers of note for PCHS were freshman Michael Kane, who finished with a 57, and sophomore Talon Shuttleworth, who finished with a 70.
“I’m really happy that I was able to be low medalist today,” Gibb said. “I got a little nervous during my round because I had two double-bogeys. I had a one stroke lead going into the last hole, and luckily, I was able to finish strong.”
The Warriors traveled to Bridge Haven Golf Club in Fayetteville September 4 for a match against Midland Trail and Nicholas County high schools. NCHS won the day as a team, but that did not stop the PCHS golfers from making a splash.
Most notably, Gibb torched the competition by scoring a 34(-2), good enough for low medalist. The next closest golfer was NCHS Ben Marsh, who trailed Gibb by five strokes for a 39(+3). PCHS golfer Kane finished with a score of 53, tying his lowest outing on the season. Meanwhile, Shuttleworth had his lowest round of the season with a 68.
“None of us had ever been to this course before,” Kane commented. “It’s actually a really nice course, and we had great weather. I was happy with my score for today. I’ve been slowly improving throughout the season. I’m really looking forward to our next match to see if I can improve my score.”
The PCHS golf team will compete against Greenbrier East, Greenbrier West and Richwood high schools September 18 at the Lewisburg Elks Country Club.
