I saw a quote the other day that got me to thinking: “If you are more fortunate than others, build a longer table, not a taller fence.” This letter is addressed to fellow Christians.
If someone was at your front door in tattered clothes and told you that he was hungry and feared for his life, what would you do? If unsure, let me direct you to Matthew 25:31-46, which addresses the future judgment of man. An excerpt: “Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels! For I was hungry and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink; I was a stranger and you didn’t take Me in; I was naked and you didn’t clothe Me, sick and in prison and you didn’t take care of Me… Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me either.”
We are currently bombarded by media on both sides of the fence and each of us, knowingly or unknowingly, has chosen a side. I ask you what side have you chosen? What path have you taken? Jesus wisely told us to judge a man by his fruits, what he displays in his character, his actions, and how he influences those around him. President Trump does not produce fruit consistent with repentance. He uses deceit, deception, discord, demagoguery, and disorder (chaos) in an attempt to garner our support and feed his ego. You notice each word used begins with the letter “d.” I chose these words because they are the same tools used by the devil himself.
President Trump cleverly selected “right to life” as a hook to spur some religious leaders and some of their followers to pick him as their choice. For those of us who demand protection of the unborn, are we just as willing to prevent harm of innocent and defenseless children who stand before us crying with evident suffering? How do we turn our backs on what is happening to undocumented immigrants, especially their children, who are being separated from their parents in countless numbers. Let us remember what Jesus said when He stood with the disciples and called a child to Him, “whoever welcomes one child like this in My name welcomes Me. But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me – it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea! (Matthew 18:5-6). Those children who believe in Jesus are being thwarted. Those who have not yet come to Christ have been thwarted as well by how they are being treated – how can they come to know Christ if this is how Christians are treating them?
So, fellow Christians, are we willing to do for Christ by doing for those who stand before us at the door of our nation asking for our help? Are we willing to give the same protection to children who have been born as we would for those unborn? This is not merely a quiz to provoke thought. Jesus demands more of us, and it is time we step up and do His will.
