PMH offers educational opportunities
Pocahontas Memorial Hospital takes its mission to serve the community very seriously – not only in providing high quality healthcare for our patients, but in being an educational resource. PMH’s Outreach Committee has been responsible for planning great community events like the Annual Spring Fling and the Youth Health Fair; but committee members also plan and organize many opportunities to learn more about taking control of one’s own health.
During the months of March through November, PMH hosts Senior Luncheons. In addition to a great lunch provided free of charge, a different speaker presents each month on a topic of interest to the group. Topics can range from heart health and healthy eating to foot care and the difference between generic and name brand medicines. This month’s Senior Luncheon will be held Wednesday, October 29, at 1p.m. with Donna Lidel-Burley giving an update on the flu and viruses. RSVP to Edwina Garber at 304-799-7400 ext. 1081 if you wish to attend.
PMH hosts two support groups. A Diabetes Support Group meets monthly to exchange ideas and diabetes tips and also hear a speaker. This month’s group will meet on Tuesday, October 28, at 6:30 p.m. for a game night. A Tobacco Cessation Support Group also meets at the hospital to help folks in stopping the use of tobacco. Support is available in a group or individual setting.
Educational classes are offered throughout the year including B-N Charge Diabetes Self-Management classes and Dining with Diabetes cooking classes. Dining with Diabetes classes are free and open to people with diabetes and their family members or those interested in learning how to cook in a diabetes-friendly manner. The Dining with Diabetes program helps people make lifestyle changes through clinical testing, nutrition information, recipe demonstrations, exercise and group support. A new year of classes started October 6 at the Marlinton Presbyterian Church.
Hospital staff is also available to come to your organization to present health- related talks or workshops. For example, Heart Health presentations have been given at CEOS clubs and Healthy Cooking demonstrations for Wellness Days. If you have a need for a speaker, please contact us. We are more than happy to help and have a number of qualified, knowledgeable folks available to speak on practically any topic you might be interested in.
