At the board of education meeting Monday night, treasurer Sherry Radcliff and Greenbrier County Schools treasurer David McClure gave a report on the board’s financial statement.
Radcliff and McClure said the school system is in good standing with its financials and is operating in the black. The statement shows a carryover of approximately $800,000 which will be placed in the general fund.
In updates:
• Superintendent Dr. Donald Bechtel reported that the archery team was awarded a $2,000 grant from Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. The team will use the money for supplies and its practice location.
In financial management, the board approved the following:
• Payment of vendor listings of claims in the amounts of $10,277.89, $29,647.27 and $31,659.39.
• Bank reconciliation for the month of July 2014.
• Extra duty pay for the month of August 2014.
• Financial Statement of the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
In miscellaneous management, the board approved the following:
• Valerie Hurley, a resident of Pocahontas County, to enroll her child in Greenbrier County School, retroactive to September 15, for the 2014-2015 school year.
• To place the following procedures on 30-day comment: CGBAD – Duties (Director of Transportation); CGBAE – Director of Special Education; CGBAD – Director of Instruction; CGBAG –Duties Food Service Supervisor; and CGBAH – The Athletic Director.
In personnel management, the board approved the following:
• Employment of Rita G. Fortney as academic interventionist at Green Bank Elementary-Middle School, effective September 24 through May 8, 2015, at $20 per hour, three hours per day, as needed, not to exceed $8,400.
• Requested transfer of Nicole Rose-Taylor from teacher of GED Option at Pocahontas County High School to teacher of early education at Marlinton Elementary School, at state basic salary based on degree and experience, effective October 1, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Term of employment is 164 days. Term of employment shall be 200 days each year thereafter.
• Purchase of planning time of Richard F. McLaughlin, teacher of music at Marlinton Elementary and Marlinton Middle schools, four days per week, as needed, retroactive to the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, at regular hourly rate of pay.
• Employment of Amy Coleman as teacher of science/biology at Pocahontas County High School at state basic salary based on degree and experience, effective September 23 for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year, term of employment is 150 days. Term of employment shall be 200 days each year thereafter.
• Creation of position half-time secretary III/accountant III at the central office, at state basic pay, effective October 15, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Term of employment is 186 one-half days, including 17 uncompensated one-half days. Term of employment shall be 240 one-half days each year thereafter. Continuation of position is contingent upon funding through North Central West Virginia Community Action Association, Inc.
• Resignation of Teresa W. Barb as substitute teacher for Pocahontas County Schools, retroactive to September 8.
• Employment of the following as substitute teachers for Pocahontas County Schools, effective September 24 ( or upon completion of the RESA IV online substitute teacher training program and licensure by the West Virginia Department of Education, Office of Professional Preparation), as needed, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year, at state basic pay: Delia Delgado, Salania Evans Bass, Anita Gayle Mills, Patricia Heinemann, Kayala Jordan, Amanda McClure, Sean C. Rodriguez and Christin D. Shinaberry.
• Employment of the following as substitute cooks for Pocahontas County Schools, effective September 24, as needed, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year, at state basic pay. Employment pending background clearance by the West Virginia State Police: Ollie Barkley, Cynthia Defibaugh, Carl Kelk, Crystal Sisler, Rhonda Woodruff and Tammy Wright.
• Employment of the following as substitute custodians for Pocahontas County Schools, effective September 24, as needed, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year, at state basic pay. Employment pending background clearance by the West Virginia State Police: Ollie Barkley, Carl Kelk, Steve Saffel, Rhonda Woodruff and Tammy Wright.
• Employment of the following as substitute maintenance workers for Poca- hontas County Schools, effective September 24, as needed, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Employment pending background clearance by the West Virginia State Police: John W. Evans, Carl Kelk and Steve Saffel.
• Employment of the following as substitute teacher’s aides for Pocahontas County Schools, effective September 24, as needed, for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year. Employment pending background clearance by the West Virginia State Police: Ollie Barkley, Cynthia Defibaugh, Salania Evans Bass, Haley Hensler, Lisa G. Rich and Tanya Warder.
• Supervising Aide Agreement between the following and Pocahontas County Board of Education, retroactive to the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, at a salary increase that is one pay grade above the minimum salary to which she is entitled to: Michelle L. Arbogast, Sarah A. Cover, Renee D. Hill, Ella M. Taylor, Carrie L. Hickman, Tina M. Sharp, Susan M. Carr Armstrong, Nicole A. Dilley, TaBeatha J. McCoy, Carolyn J. Pennington, Heather D. Simmons, Felicia L. Smith, Tonja S. Armstrong, Dorthie I. Shamblin, Cindy Wade-Price, Janet Cole and Rebecca Davis.
• Release for professional leave of Mary Sue Burns, teacher at Pocahontas County High School, to fulfill duties as an appointed member of the West Virginia Commission for Professional Teaching Standards, effective September 23, as needed.
The board of education will meet at Hillsboro Elementary School Monday, October 6, at 1 p.m. for the local school improvement council/faculty senate meeting.
The next board meeting is Monday, October 13, at 7 p.m. at the board of education conference room.
