EMT-B Classes to be held at PMH

For the first time ever, EMT-B classes are available at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. Classes will be held in the hospital’s new training center classroom located in the Business Office Annex adjacent to Pocahontas Pharmacy.

The first day of class is Tuesday, August 19. Registration will take place at the first class and no pre-registration or prerequisites are necessary. The classes are a 150 hour series, beginning at 6 p.m. each evening and lasting four hours. Classes will meet two or three times each week with the exception of Thanksgiving week. Classes will conclude December 1 with testing held later in the week. Upon successful completion of the test, certification as an EMT is useful for military service, volunteer fire departments, EMS agencies, hospitals, security agencies and many other employment opportunities.

A new requirement in the curriculum is that students perform 10 assessments on real patients. Class instructors are working with the Pocahontas Memorial Hospital Emergency Department to offer this experience in a real medical setting. Other sites for patient assessment are the Pocahontas Care Center and local ambulance squads.

Tuition for the EMT-B classes is $225. The course book and supplies will be an additional $135.

Janet Ghigo, the EMS Chief for the Bartow-Frank-Durbin Fire and Rescue, stresses that this is a great price as it would cost several thousand dollars if you were to take the same class through a community college. Refresher hours are free.

Please contact Janet Ghigo at 304-456-3298 for more information.
