The timeless Broadway hit Man of La Mancha is coming to the stage at Greenbrier Valley Theatre. The awe inspiring musical will run June 13 and 14, 18 through 21 and 25 through 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. There will be two Saturday matinée performances June 21 and 28 at 3 p.m. and a Pay-What-You-Can Preview performance Sunday, June 12, at 7:30 p.m.
Dale Wasserman’s remarkable musical is a play-within-a-play featuring Miguel de Cervantes as he unfolds his precious play Don Quixote while imprisoned during the Spanish Inquisition. Cervantes brings to life aging, eccentric Quixote and his lovable companion Sancho Panza, embarking on a quest for knighthood, in honor of his fair lady, “Dulcinea” Aldonza.
Bringing GVT’s production of Man of La Mancha to life is a cast of more than 20 members of professional and community actors. The show features Kenneth Derby as Don Quixote, Kenny Wade Marshall as Sancho Panza, and Kim Morgan Dean as Aldonza. The dedicated cast began rehearsing in mid-May to prepare for the June opening.
Prior to Wassermann’s Man of La Mancha, many attempts had fallen short in successfully adapting Cervantes masterpiece Don Quixote. Wasserman took a unique approach. By incorporating the play-within-a-play structure, he told the story of both the writer and the novel and reminded audiences that even the unlikely among us can achieve “The Impossible Dream.”
When Man of La Mancha first premiered in 1965, it saw instant success and played for 2,328 performances at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre and on Broadway at the Martin Beck, Eden and Mark Hellinger Theatres. It has since been revived four times on Broadway and played countless performances around the world.
Tickets are $26 for general admission, $23 for seniors and $20 for children/students. For tickets or more information, call the GVT Box Office at 304-645-3838 or visit www.gvtheatre.org.
