March 24, 2014, around 2 o’clock, Heaven rejoiced and the angels sang “Love Lifted Me!” Evalen Mabel Clowser Palmer Arvin became an angel and a beautiful flower in God’s garden.
She was reunited with her loved ones who were waiting to welcome her home –– her youngest daughter, Bonny Palmer; first husband and father of her children, Ernest Palmer; second husband, Aubrey Arvin; also there to welcome her were her parents, Gilbert and Bessie Clowser; three brothers, Keith, Jim and Bob; and her only sister, Colleen LaRue. Mabel was the last of her immediate family.
She leaves two daughters, Brenda Palmer Jackson and Patricia Palmer Fuller; five granddaughters; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mabel donated her body to the School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. She had always wanted one of her family members to go to medical school but was not successful, so she decided she would go herself.
Mabel loved learning and teaching. She graduated as Valedictorian of the 1942 Marlinton High School class, Summa Cum Laude from Concord University, received a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University and worked many hours toward her PhD. She taught elementary school in West Virginia and Virginia. She also taught classes at Dabney Lancaster College and Longwood College in Virginia.
Brenda, Patty and all of Mother and Nana’s family want all the employees of the Pocahontas Center to know how much they appreciate the kind, gentle, excellent and loving care she was given while she was a resident there.
Thanks to each and every one who helped give our mother and Nana her “Happy Ending!”
