‘100 Miles in 100 Days’
Join us in the exciting challenge to walk 100 miles in 100 days – March 17 through June 24. Everyone who completes the challenge will receive a free commemorative T-shirt and will be entered in a drawing for a free six-month membership at the Community Wellness Center in Marlinton or Green Bank. “100 Miles in 100 Days” is co-sponsored by the WVU Extension Service, Pocahontas County Parks and Recreation and Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. Registration materials are available by calling the Extension office at 304-799-4852. Registrations are due by March 17.
4-H Recycling Contest
Attention 4-H clubs! The Solid Waste Authority is sponsoring a contest among all Pocahontas County 4-H Clubs to see which club can collect the most newspapers – by weight – between March 1 and April 12. Please note that this contest is for newspapers only. Contact your local 4-H club leader today for all the details on how your club can participate and compete for cash prizes.
Educational Dinner Meeting
An Educational Dinner Meeting will be held Tuesday, March 18, at 6:30 p.m. in the Marlinton Municipal Building.
Scott Bowdridge will present a program on Parasite Control. Bowdridge is an Assistant Professor of Food Animal Production in the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences at WVU. His current research is focused on the development of immunity in sheep resistant to roundworm parasite infection. He also serves as the faculty advisor to the ANS graduate student organization and coaches the WVU livestock judging team. He will be centering his presentation around parasite management during the back-grounding phase in beef cattle and during the post-weaning phase in lambs.
Attendance at this meeting will be worth three (3) pesticide applicator recertification credits for categories 11, 12 and PA.
To attend the meeting you must RSVP to the Pocahontas County Extension Office by calling 304-799-4852 by Friday, March 14. For those who would like dinner, there will be a $3 charge to help cover the cost.

Energy Express service/employment opportunities are now available for the 2014 Marlinton Elementary Energy Express Site for one site supervisor, four mentors, and one community coordinator. Master Gardener Trainee Sign-up
The WVU Extension Service is now taking sign-ups for the West Virginia Master Gardener Training Course which will be held this spring. Each of the 10 classes will be approximately three hours long for a total of 30 hours of classroom training. The course schedule will be announced following sign-up. We require 10 participants to offer the course. Cost for the course will be $75. Sign-up deadline will be Friday, March 21. Classes will likely begin Monday, March 24, and will continue on Mondays 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. To sign-up or for more information please call the WVU Extension Office at 304-799-4852.
