Pocahontas County Chamber of Commerce held its sixth annual “FISH BOWL” Grant Program May 2 at the Green Bank Observatory.
Malinda Meck, representing The OutHouse LLC in Green Bank, provided a $500 grant for the event. All attendees paid a $10 fee. These fees were added to the grant for a total award of $750. A light dinner was served, sponsored by chamber member Denise Campbell.
Three contestants took part in the event.
First place was awarded to Michele Wilfong for “CW’s Corn Maze.” This fall adventure of opening a corn maze for the general public will give families an opportunity to share an educational as well as fun-filled experience. In addition to the corn maze, there will be pumpkins to purchase, a petting zoo and a fun corn box.
The event is named for Wilfong’s son, Charles Wilfong, III, who is known as “CW.”
This event will take place “on the straight” of Rt. 66 going toward Cass, and, depending on its success, may become an annual event.
Other candidates who participated were:
Darrick Hayhurst, who made a pitch for his barbershop, the Barber Stop. This business is located near Snowshoe. His clients can get a shave and a haircut in a family friendly environment. While waiting, clientele can enjoy foosball, darts or watch a game on the big screen TV. You are encouraged to visit this new business.
Sally G. Cobb made a pitch for Farmer Phil’s Fresh Market in Hillsboro. This business is slated to open in September 2019. It is conveniently located near Burton Square, home of Burton’s Laundromat, Deb Ann’s Fabrics, Jeanie’s Stylin’ Salon and Melissa’s Knit and Hobby Shop. Farmer Phil’s will have an assortment of fresh produce, arts and crafts, a deli, soups, salad bar, homemade ice cream and sorbets. It will provide a nice atmosphere for local residents and the traveling public to gather and socialize.
