The two Class A girls basketball Region 2 Section 1 semi-final games were held Thursday night at Elkins High School. Clarksburg Notre Dame beat Tygarts Valley 53-46 in the first game, so Tygarts Valley will not advance to Friday’s Section 1 Championship and thus not make it back to Charleston for a second straight year. Tygarts Valley upset PCHS in regionals last year at PCHS preventing the Lady Warriors from advancing to states for a fifth straight year.
In the second game last night Tucker County soundly defeated Union Grant 70-35, so Tucker will return again to the Section 1 championship tonight, Friday, versus Clarksburg Notre Dame at Elkins High School. The game begins at 7 PM.
The Section 1 results mean that Pocahontas County, Pendleton County, Tucker County and Clarksburg Notre Dame will be the four schools competing in the two Region 2 Championship games for the two slots in the state tournament. The winner of each of the two sectional championships, the one tonight and the PCHS/Pendleton County game on Saturday, will host the loser of the opposite section on Wednesday, March 5 at 7 PM. The two regional game winners advance to Charleston along with six other Class A teams from the other three regions to open play on Thursday, March 13 at the Charleston Civic Center.
The Lady Warriors face Pendleton County at 1 PM on Saturday at Petersburg High School in the Section 2 Championship game and hope to win the home court advantage by winning the game. PCHS is trying to win it’s 13th straight sectional championship and then their 8th trip to states in the last 13 years and also in school history by winning a regional game.
