Hubert Samuel Callison, age 97 years and 11 days, of Hillsboro, went to be with his beloved wife, Virginia, Friday, February 17, 2017, at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton. Hubert and Virginia were married for 69 years.
Born February 6, 1920, he was a son of the late Denny Mount and Rexford Sammons Callison.
Hubert was a 1939 graduate of Hillsboro High School. He continued his education at Greenbrier Military School and West Virginia University, where he excelled in football. A football knee injury prevented him from serving in the armed forces during World War II. However, he served his country as a welding inspector for war ships manufactured in Pennsylvania.
After the war, the new family briefly returned to West Virginia, living and working on Morlunda Farms in Greenbrier County. In 1948, they moved to the family farm on Trump Run where they established, owned and operated Sun Valley Dairy. Hubert was also a county deputy assessor for many years.
Hubert loved life and people. He enjoyed work, both on the farm and for the county. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gardening and traveling with his wife. They traveled to all 50 states and several foreign countries. He was active in many community organizations. He was an Elder and Deacon in the Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. He was a director in the Federal Land Bank, Production Credit and Farmers’ Home and Fire Insurance Company. He was active in Habitat for Humanity, Farm Bureau, Farming for Better Living, the District Soil Conservation Service, Ruritans and Pocahontas County 4-H and Extension programs.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, a sister, Virginia Callison Campbell; and brothers, Harry Callison, Gilmer Callison and Leo Callison.
He is survived by a son, Joel Callison, and wife, Stella, of Hillsboro; two daughters, Carolyn Randolph, and husband, Lynn, of Hillsboro, and Jane Crosby, and husband, Gary, of South Charleston; and three treasured grandsons, Caleb Crosby, and wife, Sierra, of Westminster, Colorado, Mathias Callison, of Springdale, Arkansas, and Michael Callison, of Hillsboro.
Funeral service is Saturday, February 25, 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church with Rev. Andrew Rice officiating. Interment will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Hillsboro. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service.
