Pocahontas County High School men’s basketball season is well underway, and the Warriors are off to a good start, having won four games so far.
On Monday, the Bath County Chargers visited and were soundly defeated by a score of 90 to 50.
Senior Brandon Halterman led a well-balanced scoring attack with 16 points while Logan Dilley contributed 13 points along with several assists and steals. Senior Brady Jones and junior Jarret Taylor also contributed 13 points each.
The Warriors started out fast and furious, hitting two three-pointers in their first four shots, as they jumped out to a 26 to 7 first quarter lead. Good shooting and stifling defense continued while the boys cruised to a 47 to 18 half time score.
After three quarters and with the score 69 to 30, Coach Tim McClung emptied the bench to make sure everyone got playing time. The reserves accounted for themselves well and finished with a 90 to 50 win.
Caleb Fry led the Chargers with 18.
The crowd was sparse probably due to the previous game December 12 when PCHS defeated the Chargers in Bath County, 74 to 26.
The Warriors tangled with the always tough Pendleton County Wildcats December 15 at Warrior Coliseum.
The PCHS boys slowly built and maintained a lead into half time at 34 to 20. But the Wildcats came back strong in the third quarter, led by strong shooting from the Cooper twins and Tyler Day as they scored 24 points and took a two-point lead.
The Warriors recovered their shooting touch and played better defense in the fourth stanza as they outscored the Wildcats 17 to 10 to post a final score of 63 to 54 to secure the win.
Pendleton will get their chance at revenge January 11 when the Warriors travel to Franklin.
In upcoming games, the PCHS Warriors will travel to Lewisburg Wednesday, December 21, to meet Greenbrier East. December 22, East Hardy will visit Warrior Coliseum for what is sure to be a good game.
