It was a hot night in Tucker County Friday, but football games must go on.
The #10 ranked Pocahontas County High School Warriors traveled to Parsons to take on their longtime rival, the Tucker County Mt. Lions.
The game was an exciting defensive battle.
The Warriors won the toss and chose to kick-off.
Kicker Drake Warder put the ball deep into Mt. Lions’ territory, and the Warrior defense took over.
The defensive line consists of T/DT Danny Kimble, C/CD Brady Jones, G/DE Drake Warder and T/DT Caleb Mullenax.
Linebackers are Morgan Mason, Mark Jordan, Shane Peacock, Logan Davis and Micheal Morrison.
Corners are Ryan Irvine and Logan Dilley, and at Safety, Wyatt Workman and Morgan Baldwin.
The Mt. Lions were unable to move the ball and had to punt.
The Warrior offense took the field and made several attempts toward the end zone, but came up short.
QB Wyatt Workman completed a 24-yard pass to WR Briar Wilfong and a 12-yard pass to WR Irvine, but the Mt. Lion defense was strong and forced the Warriors to turn over the ball on downs.
The Mt. Lion offensive drive was cut short by a fumble at the 35-yard line. It was recovered by Davis.
The Warriors were unable to convert the turnover into something positive and the score at the end of the first quarter was 0 – 0.
In the second quarter, the Warriors found some offense with an eight-yard pass to WR Irvine and rushing yardage from RBs Mason, Morrison and Davis, and the Warriors scored on a quarterback sneak by Workman.
Logan Dilley’s extra point kick was good, bringing the score to 7 – 0 Warriors.
The second half was all about the defense.
Linebacker Jordan led the Warrior defense with 10.5 tackles and one interception.
The Warriors never backed down, with several fourth down stands, shutting out the Mt. Lions.
The Warrior offense ran 61 plays, racking up a total of 232 yards to Tucker County’s 108 yards in 47 plays; and the Warriors had 15 first downs to Tucker’s six.
The Warriors travel to Moorefield Friday, September 2, to take on the Moorefield Yellow Jackets.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
