The greatest storyteller of our lifetime, Charlie Brock, has gone to be with the Lord. Born in Highland County, Virginia, near the Blue Ridge Mountains, Charlie had a larger than life personality that will be missed by all his friends and family.
Always a world changer since birth, he joined the Navy at 18 years old, married Doris McLaughlin and began to raise three sons, Tom, Jim and Tim. After four years in the United States Navy he joined the Virginia State Police where he protected and served the citizens of Virginia. All the while raising his boys to understand what it meant to work hard and live by the “Golden Rule.” Teaching them how to be self-sufficient by hunting, fishing, growing and selling vegetables along US Rt 10, to cooking and eating just about everything they grew or caught. Doris had her hands full with all those boys, their antics, and Charlie’s sense of adventure.
In 1975, his local cookouts which hosted many people took on a whole new form by founding Brock’s Catering. All the while leading up to Charlie’s vision of serving the community with a restaurant.
In 1987, after 28 years of service, Charlie retired from the Virginia State Police and Brock’s Barbecue was born. That is a total of 63 years serving the community with stories only Charlie could tell, Good Food, Good Friends and Good Times.
In 1999, he fully retired to Deltaville, Virginia, where his view of the Chesapeake Bay was his continual solace. Retirement was not a word in Charlie’s vocabulary. While there he became involved with the Middlesex Moose Lodge 2401, where he enjoyed sharing all his stories, cooking, fishing, making new recipes and trying them out on all his friends and family. I’m sure you have heard, “here, try this” at one time or another. His sons, Tim and Jim, run his dream with all his grandchildren working and serving in some form to make Brock’s the family business that it is today.
