Nellie Sue Adkison, age 99, of Hillsboro, peacefully passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026.
Born August 29, 1926, at Mill Point, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Amy Burgess.
She was married to Freeman Adkison.
Nellie had many jobs over the years and was always a hard worker. She cleaned house and babysat for her dear friend, Brenda Jackson. She babysat the McNeel boys and was a tour guide at the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace Museum. She was a nurse’s aide at Denmar State Hospital and later at Pocahontas Center, where she worked for 18 years, retiring at the age of 76.
Nellie found joy in life’s simple pleasures and in her family and friends. She loved making crafts for others, baking salt-rising bread and other treats. She loved cats and had many over the years; her most recent a male cat that she had mistaken the gender and named him Suzy.
One of her greatest blessings was living long enough to meet her great-grandchildren and watching her family grow.
Those who knew Nellie well, knew her spunky spirit. She was outspoken and never afraid to tell others what she thought.
She was a member of Marvin Chapel Church and Hillsboro Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Adkison; daughter, Cathy Jean; son, Johnny Kelley; and a sister, Hazel McClung.
She is survived by her daughter, Sue Kennison, of Buckeye; son, Freeman William “Billy” Adkison, of Bumpass, Virginia; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held at Marvin Chapel Church Monday, July 13, 2026, with Pastor John Paul Burks officiating.
Interment was in Ruckman Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pocahontas County Animal Shelter.
