The Pocahontas County High School Warriors played their sixth game Friday night, as they traveled to Charmco with one thing on their minds – beat the Greenbrier West Cavaliers.
The Warriors won the toss and received the kick-off, but were unable to score. Punter J.D. Hensler didn’t give the Cavaliers very good field position and the Warrior defense was outstanding – not giving up any ground.
The Warriors caused a Cav fumble and took over to play some offense.
A 69-yard pass from QB Wyatt Workman to WR J.D. Hensler put the first points on the board. Hensler’s successful kick brought the score to 7 – 0.
Capitalizing on a second Cavalier fumble, throwing in some great blocking, allowed Workman to score on a 15-yard run. Henlser put it through the uprights and at the beginning of the second quarter the score was 14 – 0.
The Cav’s first score came on a 78-yard kick-off return. The extra point was good, bringing the score to 14 – 7.
The Warrior offense was ready to fire back, and they did with an eight-yard rush by RB Morgan Mason. The extra point was blocked. Score, 20 – 7.
Workman, playing Safety, caused another turnover with an interception and ran the ball to the 37-yard line. A 37-yard pass to, and a great catch by Hensler put the Warriors in the end zone again. A two-point attempt did not pay off, but the Warriors were up 26 – 7.
Taking over on a Cavs’ fourth down, the Warriors scored on an 18-yard scramble by Workman, with amazing blocking by linemen Drake Warder, Danny Kimble, Caleb Mullenax, Mark Jordan and Keith Harrah.
A second attempt at two points proved unsuccessful leaving the score at the end of the first half, Warriors 32, Cavs 7.
The Cavaliers’ defense scored in the third quarter with an interception that led to a 35-yard run. Score 32 – 14.
The Warriors and the Cavaliers each added another TD bringing the final score to 39 – 20.
The Warriors had some great coverage from Cade Walker, Ryan Irvine and Dalton Irvine.
The team will travel to Tygarts Valley High School Friday night to take on the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. in a Potomac Valley Conference Game.
