The Pocahontas County High School Warriors took on the Bath County Chargers at Charger Stadium in Hot Springs, Virginia, on Thursday night. Game night was changed due to impending severe weather in both counties.
Playing under the Thursday night lights did not deter the Warriors at all.
The Chargers were the first to score on a 20-yard pass late in the second quarter, but that would be the only points the Warriors allowed that night. The extra point was blocked and the score was 6 – 0.
The Warriors answered with a quick couple of passes to put them down field into Charger territory. A 29-yard pass from QB Wyatt Workman to WR J. D. Hensler resulted in the Warriors’ first touchdown of the game. The extra point was no good; score 6 – 6.
Forcing the Chargers to punt, the Warriors took over on their own 20-yard line. Several first downs later, the Warriors were once again in scoring position.
Workman ran into the end zone on a 13-yard scramble with some outstanding blocking from the Warrior line. The Warriors were on top, and with the extra point, they took the lead 13 – 6 at the end of the first half.
The Warriors controlled the second half, not letting the Chargers gain any ground. They forced a lot of turnovers and the Warriors capitalized once more with a 24-yard pass from Dalton Irvine to Hensler. Hensler kicked the extra point, bringing the final score to 20 – 6.
The Warriors are now 4 -2 for the season and are ranked #15 in the West Virginia High School Power Rankings.
Looking to improve their record, the Warriors will travel to Charmco Friday night to take on the Greenbrier West Cavaliers (2 – 4).
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
