Wayne C. Brown, 88,. of Arbovale, peacefully passed away at Pocahontas Center Tuesday, October 15, 2024.
Born May 5, 1936, at Arbovale, he was a son of the late Warren E. and Grace Johnson Brown.
Wayne was a lifelong resident of Arbovale.
He attended Arbovale United Methodist Church and Pine Grove Church of the Brethren. He faithfully played his harmonica at church and loved to play it for friends and family. Wayne was a hard worker. When he was younger, he dug graves by hand at Arbovale Cemetery. He was also a timber cutter, and later worked and retired from Interstate Hardwoods. He also worked at Cass Scenic Railroad as a brakeman and at a green box site for Pocahontas County Solid Waste.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate, Sadie Nelson Vandevender; sister, Betty Mullenax; and four brothers, Bob, John Glenville, Hunter Keith and Tom.
He is survived by one sister, Mary Pat Bundrum, of Jacksonville, Alabama; stepdaughter, Kim Johns (Gary); stepson, James Vandevender; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life was held Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale with Pastor Amy Paul and Pastor David Rittenhouse officiating. Burial was in Arbovale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Northern Pocahontas County Community Assistance Inc (NPCCA) c/o Tony Byrd, 6224 Potomac Highlands Trail, Green Bank, WV 24944. This is an affiliate of the Green Bank Senior Center, which was a place Wayne enjoyed going to for great meals and fellowship with friends that were like loving family.
Donations can also be made to Allegheny Mountain Radio, 9836 Browns Creek Rd, Dunmore, WV 24934. Wayne faithfully listened to this radio station when he was home. He enjoyed hearing the music, news and community events.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Pocahontas Center for the care, love, compassion, kindness and support shown to Wayne while he was a resident there.
