
Thirty-two Pocahontas County youth participated in this year’s 4-H/FFA Livestock Show and Sale August 23 at the Pocahontas Producers Stockyards in Marlinton. A total of 53 animals were exhibited and judged (7 steers, 17 hogs, 23 lambs, and 6 goats). Forty-three animals were sold (6 market steers, 15 market hogs, 17 market lambs, and 5 market goats) at the Livestock Sale which had a total sales volume of $106,775.
Last year’s total sales volume was $50,722 with 26 youth selling 42 animals.
All the day’s activities were well attended by members of the community showing their support of the youth.
Winners of Showmanship contests were Owen Sattler, Junior Beef; Riley Ann Hamons, Senior Beef; Trey Sattler, Master Beef; Sullivan Seldomridge, Junior Swine; Cammi Warner, Senior Swine; Traves Lewis, Master Swine; Ryley Kerr, Junior Sheep; Lane Wilfong, Senior Sheep; Mallori McCoy, Master Sheep; Sienna Hamons, Senior Goat; Lane Wilfong, Master Goat.

Winner of the Pee Wee Lamb Contest was Hudsyn McCoy.
New this year – Matt Barkley, Pocahontas County 4-H Youth Livestock Club and PCHS FFA provided belt buckles for showmanship winners.

Exhibitors competed in Skillathon competitions sponsored by Mosesso Agency to enhance the educational aspect of the market animal projects. Trey Sattler won the Junior Division with a perfect score; Victor Dean placed second, and Silas Dean placed third. Traves Lewis won Senior Division with a perfect score; Jessica Armstrong placed second, and Amber Defibaugh placed third. Each will receive a cash prize.
The Lyndsee Gay Lambert Memorial was awarded to the overall Premier Exhibitor for the day, Traves Lewis.
He receives a “traveling” engraved plaque and a $100 scholarship in memory of Lyndsee to use for purchase, care and showing of livestock.


The Grand Champion Market Goat, exhibited by Lane Wilfong, was purchased by Mitchell Chevrolet for $9.50/lb. Farm Credit purchased the Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat, exhibited by Traves Lewis, for $8.50/lb.

The Grand Champion Market Hog, exhibited by Traves Lewis, was sold for $7/lb. to Mitchell Chevrolet.

The Reserve Grand Champion Market Hog, exhibited by Leanne Green, was purchased by Southern States for $9/lb.


The Grand Champion Market Lamb, exhibited by Mallori McCoy, was purchased by Hillsboro Pub/Terrell Burns, for $11/lb. James River Equipment Company purchased the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb, exhibited by Traves Lewis, for $18/lb.


The Grand Champion Market Steer, exhibited by Trey Sattler, was purchased by Crystal Dean/Dari-Land for $8.50/lb. The Reserve Grand Champion Steer, exhibited by Owen Sattler, was purchased by Southern States for $7/lb.
Show premiums totaling more than $1,500 were donated from City National Bank, Paul Hill Farms, Ben Wilfong and Davis Trust. In addition, Southern States purchased a handmade wooden 4-H plaque, donated by Denmar Correctional Facility/Kirk Walton, for $2,500 to fund show premiums.

Jean McClure made a white-iced yellow sheet cake decorated with two red barns, animals and 4-H/FFA logos. It was auctioned to Glades Building Supply for $1,500 to fund project premiums for all county 4-Hers.
Judge for the show was Garrett Vaughan. Kurt Mothes served as the announcer. Ben Wilfong was the auctioneer and Nicole Brock was the photographer.
Lunch, consisting of hot dogs and walking tacos, was served by Brushy Flat Bushwackers 4-H Club.
Pork barbecue dinners were provided by Marlinton Lion’s Club. Exhibitor meals were donated by the
Pocahontas County 4-H Leaders Association.
PCHS FFA hosted youth games.
Dari-Land provided prizes for the games and Farm Credit provided T-shirts.
Evan Rose assisted in the show arena and hauled livestock.

Livestock projects increase basic agricultural awareness and recordkeeping skills and provide exhibitors the opportunity to build financial savings for higher education through selling their livestock.
