Green Bank Elementary-Middle School’s 2016-2017 Student Council visited residents and joined in activities at Pocahontas Center last week during National Nursing Home Week.

GBMS teacher Amanda Ryder coordinated the trip.

Ryder, who was a certified nursing assistant during her college years, talked with the students about ways to interact with residents in long term care facilities.

After that discussion, the students decided that a visit to Pocahontas Center was something they wanted to do for the community.

“They really enjoyed themselves,” Ryder said. “The students told stories about themselves, and also listened to some of the wonderful stories that the residents had to tell. They served snacks and drinks, help residents into the recreation room and played games, such as checkers, with them.

“They are already talking about going back next year.”

Student council members are Max O’Ganian, Mason Solliday, Iam Johnston, Sean Beverage, Cheylin Woodruff and Jacob Barkley.
