Staff from the Pocahontas County Farm Service and Department of Forestry met with Jo Santiago of Flying Higher, LLC in Buckeye Friday to release a rehabilitated owl. The Strix varia, or Barred Owl, was struck by a vehicle on Rt. 219 in Buckeye in early January. Two skiers, on their way to Snowshoe, picked up the dazed owl and took it to the Farm Service office, which in turn gave it to Rick Wernicke in the Department of Forestry. Santiago, working with Jesse Fallon, a veterinarian with the Avian Conservation Center for Appalachia (ACCA), rehabilitated it. After two months of care, the healthy owl was ready to be released and get back to its home. B. Nottingham photo
